the color of pie charts

ProDiver Users, ever notice duplicate colors in your Top '10' pie graph?

Sixteen (16) colors are available in a Graph view of your data. These colors are assigned to the row values as determined by the original Model sort order. These colors repeat if there are more than sixteen rows in the Dive window, e.g. the color on row 1 is the same as row 17. In any dive, the color assignment does not change. This allows QuickViews to control the pie chart without identical values changing colors between views, e.g. Product A is always blue.

Here is an example of the standard behavior with a QuickView present: Each Region Pie Chart wedge is assigned a color based on its Model sort order. The product value: Computer 300 wedge is RED and will remain as RED after the QuickView is used to change the Region Pie Chart; Sales Region was changed from South to Mid West.

See Figures 1 & 2 at right.

Graph Attribute: Link colors to discrete data values

The standard behavior should be used when QuickViews are controlling the chart, but for a "Top 10" pie chart this may not be desired. If row order is changed in the Dive window, e.g. you have a Marker that sorts Revenue in descending order, the assignment of the color to each row still does not change. Therefore, duplicate colors might appear when this tabular is converted to a Pie Chart.

There is an option to prevent duplicate colors. De-selecting the Graph attribute check box "Link colors to discrete data values" reassigns coloring of graph elements in the current view.

Here is an example of a "Top 10" where the standard behavior may create duplicate Pie Chart colored wedges.

Step 1:
Create your Top 10 Suppliers tabular view (Figure 3).
a. Dive into Suppliers.
b. Sort by Revenue.
c. Find and Focus on First 10 Items.

Step 2:
Convert to Pie Chart (Figure 4).
a. Click on the Graph Button.
b. Select the Pie Plot Graph Type.
c. Select Revenue Total as the Pie Data Column.
d. Click OK.

The A-Treat Bottling Company wedge and The Monarch Company wedge are both blue, which is the first color in the Graph Attributes Legend Color listing. A-Treat Bottling Company is the 1st row in the original dive and The Monarch Company is the 65th row. Therefore, both are assigned the first color, that being blue.

Here is how you prevent duplicate coloring:

Step 3:
Access the Graph Attributes Dialog by double clicking on the gray area of the graph (Figure 5).

Step 4:
Uncheck the "Link colors to discrete data values" check box. Click OK (Figure 6).
